Introduction

These images are part of an on-going series that grew out of my passion for photographing adolescents. Here I am choosing to focus on the transparent sensuality, awkwardness and power that so defines this age in life. I am not only connecting with the individual, but also attempting to show them in flux, and against forces they may be facing outside of themselves.

Introduction

(Mama) is a work in progress examining the female condition as it relates to age and identity, allowing me to address my own reckoning with fading female physical power and the re-definition of self-image that comes with age. Additionally, I view the portraits of Karen - who recently lost her husband of nearly twenty years to leukemia -as her statement of resistance to mortality.

Introduction

Significant Others is a series of environmental portraits depicting the complexities of relationships and family dynamics. We all have an image of ourselves that we project in public; while being photographed, it is often times difficult to open up to the possibility of being recorded in a certain way. As a photographer I often times have a different story to tell, by experimenting with the push and pull of how people want to be seen and how I want to portray them. I am interested in telling a story that transcends and challenges the obvious role project, by showing one that may actually speak more about the true nature of that person/relationship: a point of view that may not always be comfortable.

Introduction

Unveiled is a series that introduces us to a group of modern Pakistani women living in Brooklyn New York. These women have created their own "family" here in order to live a lifestyle not accepted in their homeland. My friendship with these women has enabled me to have the proximity and the trust to create images that show the intermingling of traditional rituals with those of modern life, and also to speak about such issues as gay sexuality with the subtext of dominance and vulnerability. In so doing, I wish to challenge the notion of how we view women living in conservative societies while drawing on more universal themes of the human condition.

Introduction

Rental Home is about the pull and power of place. Whether we inhabit a place that has been visited briefly or lived in for decades by others, we put our own imprint on that space. While meshing our memories and memorabilia with those that exist there or that have come before us, inevitably we create our own snapshots and stories.

Introduction

The places we inhabit and the objects we choose to surround ourselves with speak volumes about who we are. The emotional pull of one's home environment is especially strong. We may forget what we did yesterday but the way the carpet felt underfoot in our childhood home never leaves us. The feel, smell and look of our past environments will often create vignettes for memories. In this series, I am recording instinctually, yet lovingly, my grandparents home, shortly after their death.

Artist Statement
I document my world—whether people or things or places—to find the story, make sense of life. My photographs are not snapshots, but I want them to feel that way. I try and capture simple moments that are personal and intimate, yet go deeper to touch on the complexities of emotions we all may share. My subject matter falls to the beauty of the quotidian: the way the sun comes through the window, the feeling of the carpet underfoot at the top of the stairs, a hand gesture, an unexpected expression, the way the light reflects on skin at certain times of the day. I am drawn toward describing the often-difficult process of exposing ourselves to one another, looking for tension between what may be alluring and sensual yet also uncomfortable and challenging. By looking out from my perspective as a woman at a particular juncture in time, I wish to explore the meaning of yearning, belonging, memory and home.

I use large format analog cameras and print chromogenic.

Biography

Ilisa Katz Rissman attended Art Center College of Design where she studied photography and film. Her career began as a studio photographer in Tribeca during which time Ilisa's work appeared in a variety of national publications, including, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Interview, Saveur, Town and Country and Metropolis. Ilisa Published two books, one titled Chairmania in which she photographed the miniature chair collection of the iconic designer, George Beylarian. Ilisa was the featured artist In Photo District News: Ilisa Katz’s Simple Vision.

Ilisa works concurrently on long- term projects, choosing to use large format analog cameras in order to produce detailed, provocative images. Her work is collected and shown both nationally and internationally and she is the recipient of a number of awards. A photograph from her Unveiled series was awarded by James Rondeau, director of contemporary art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Other awards include, The Forward Thinking Museum, 12 12 Gallery (juror Stephen Perloff – The Photo Review), Soho Photo Gallery/The Photo Review (juror Jennifer Blessing – The Guggenheim Museum of Art), New York Photo Festival and PX3 Prix De La Photographie, Paris. Her photography has been posted and reviewed in The New Yorker and The Philadelphia Inquirer; Ilisa is a BRIC Arts Media Fellow.

Ilisa lives in Brooklyn with her family.
